PECO Smart A/C Saver is part of the PECO Smart Ideas®, a full suite of programs that help customers use less energy and hold on to more of their hard-earned dollars.

Why it’s easy

PECO Smart A/C Saver is only activated at times of high energy usage, during the summer months of June through September. Conservation events may occur on selected summer afternoons, between noon and 8:00 p.m. Participants do not need to re-enroll each summer.

Why it’s important

Given the focus on energy, it’s more important than ever to use electricity wisely. During high summer energy use periods, PECO Smart A/C Saver works to reduce electricity usage by “cycling” participant central air conditioners throughout the region. During normal operation, your air conditioner compressor runs and rests in recurring intervals to maintain your ideal room temperature. During a PECO Smart A/C Saver conservation event, your A/C compressor may rest up to 15 minutes each half hour. PECO optimizes the operation of your A/C to reduce energy demand. This helps PECO best manage our energy resources.

Why are enrollments closed for the PECO Smart A/C Saver program?

PECO has reached the program’s capacity for 2019.

What if I already have a PECO Smart A/C Saver switch, but have not enrolled in the program?

If the PECO Smart A/C Saver switch is already installed at your home, you may join the program and receive bill credits once the switch has been activated. Call 1-866-291-3972 to have your switch activated.

Do I need to re-enroll every summer season?

No. Once you are enrolled you will remain in PECO Smart A/C Saver as long as you wish to participate or the program is offered.

How does PECO Smart A/C Saver work?

A PECO Smart A/C Saver Digital Cycling Unit (DCU) is connected to your central air conditioning unit or heat pump. On selected days from June through September, we’ll automatically cycle participating air conditioners to help balance the region’s demand for electricity. These events are known as “conservation events”.

What is "cycling"?

When regional energy demand is high, your switch will receive a radio signal that will put your A/C compressor into a “conservation mode.” Your compressor will then operate 15 minutes of each half hour during the conservation event. However, during the entire conservation event, your A/C fan will run uninterrupted, circulating cool air throughout your home to maintain comfort.

What is a DCU?

A digital cycling unit, or DCU, is a switch that is connected near your exterior air conditioning unit. It receives a radio signal from PECO to turn off your air conditioning compressor (not your entire A/C system) for up to 15 minutes each half hour during “peak” summer afternoons. This helps manage system-wide electricity demand during times of peak usage.

How will I receive my participation credit?

Bill credits will appear as a line item on your PECO summer electric bills (June – September electric usage months). Bill credits begin accumulating after your DCU is installed and are based on the billing month, which is determined by the “From” reading date of your bill. For example, if the reading date of your bill is from 5/26 through 6/25, this is considered your May bill. For the summer of 2019, monthly bill credits for the A/C cycling program are $10. Credit amounts are subject to change on an annual basis.

What if my bill is less than my monthly bill credit amount? Will the remainder be applied as a credit for the next month?

Yes. Every customer will receive the full credit regardless of the amount of your bill. Any excess will be listed as a credit for the next month’s bill.

How often will the program be activated?

The number of conservation events depends on many factors, including weather and peak electricity demand. PECO may call up to 6 events during the season.

How will I know when a PECO Smart A/C Saver conservation event is occurring?

Check your digital cycling unit (DCU). You will need to go outside to inspect the device. A red LED will appear in the window of the DCU throughout the conservation event. You can also check the PECO Smart AC Saver website at http://www.peco.com/WaysToSave/ForYourHome/Pages/SmartACSaver.aspx  on event days or receive e-mail notice of events by clicking here.

When and for how long will a conservation event last?

Conservation events typically occur on hot weekday afternoons and on average last anywhere from 4 to 6 hours.

Am I permitted to “opt out” of a conservation event?

No. The PECO Smart A/C Saver program requires 100% opt-in participation.

The event was over at 6 p.m., but my condenser is still not running. Why?

Although a start time is announced for events, all homes do not start cycling at the same time. Some homes may start cycling up to 30 minutes after the start of the event. The end times for these homes would correspond. For example, if your home starts cycling at 2:30 p.m. for a 2:00 p.m. start time of a conservation event, your home can still be cycled until 6:30 p.m.

Will PECO Smart A/C Saver affect my comfort level?

You may or may not notice that a PECO Smart A/C Saver conservation event is even occurring. During the course of a conservation event, the temperature in a typical home may rise slightly. Variables such as home insulation, shaded windows, the addition of ceiling fans, and the amount of home foot traffic are some of the things that can also affect the temperature.

I have a medical condition. Am I able to participate?

Yes, but only you can decide what’s appropriate for you. We want to make sure you are aware that the temperature inside the house will increase during a conservation event, and you should take that into consideration before enrolling.

Are there penalties for withdrawing from PECO Smart A/C Saver?

There are no penalties; however, you cannot re-enroll in the program for 12 months if you leave the program after June 1, 2019.

How long will PECO Smart A/C Saver program be available?

PECO will review the program annually at the end of the cooling season to determine the program’s future after that review.

Myth: "PECO Smart A/C Saver actually saves electricity for PECO during the conservation events."

Reality:   PECO Smart A/C Saver actually balances the demand for electricity during conservation events with non-peak events. Depending on how effectively you maintain the cool air in your space during such periods with proper insulation, shaded windows, lowered lighting, etc., and how much you call on electricity to drive your air conditioning to lower the temperature when a conservation event ends, you may significantly affect your overall energy consumption for the day.

Keep in mind that the primary purpose of the program is to balance the demand for electricity to minimize the potential for power outages and reduce the need for costly infrastructure additions. Any energy conservation that you can achieve by reducing personal demand will be a much-appreciated bonus.
